The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN was established in 1967 in Bangkok. Today there are eleven members. The population of the region is about 500 million people. Membership includes Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Singapore. ASEANs goals are to enhance economic growth, social progress and cultural development throughout the region. In addition ASEAN aims to promote regional peace and stability through relationship building.
